A NDOV ER I !-t © CQmmurlr em(er Community Center Advisory Commission Meeting Minutes Monday, May 9, 2011 6:30 pm Andover YMCA Community Center Meeting Room B In Attendance: Tony Howard, Kate Morphew, Mike Knight, Erick Sutherland, Allison Wait, Ted Butler Absent: Jason Hemp, Frank Kellogg Call To Order 6:40 pm Approval of Minutes — April 11, 2011 minutes approved as written YMCA Update — Allison Wait, has been named the Executive Director of the Andover YMCA. Ms. Wait indicated the Andover YMCA summer programs are 85% full. The Andover Y has met their April membership goals and the new carpet has been completely installed on the fitness floor. The YMCA will be co- sponsoring "The Healthy Living Race" scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 18 at Andover High School. Proceeds to benefit the YMCA. The after school youth program was very successful and has ended now for this school year. Approximately 170 separate youth participated in this program. The YMCA will be meeting with Oak View Middle School to discuss bringing more academic pieces to the after school program for the .2011/2012 school year as well as hoping to identify additional agencies or resources to assist with the program. Mike Knight asked if the YMCA does anything for homeless individuals. Ms. Wait stated the YMCA started a program 2 years ago in the Anoka County Area to assist youth homeless individuals. She said that Andover High School has been the leading local referral agency indentifying youth in need. Ms. Wait indicated that there are no other additional youth shelter or youth crises centers in the Anoka County area other than the Y program. Staff Update - Reviewed the staff status report. Financials — Statements were attached to packet. Commission encouraged to review and contact Erick if they have any questions. Other Business ® Park Commission Update, provided by Ted Butler. The skate park is scheduled to be ready by the first part of June. June I P is the grand opening at Sunshine Park. The park commission is also working on their 5 -year CIP & Comp plan. Andover YMCA Community Center Advisory Commission May 9, 2011 Page 2 x Space Utilization - Erick encouraged the advisory committee to start thinking about ideas and utilization needs for future programs at the Andover YMCA Community Center. He reminded the commission that discussions have taken place as to the need for a Youth Center. The commission asked Ms. Wait her thoughts on the most logical area for such center and she indicated the most sensible location was where meeting rooms A & B are currently located. It is located closest to YMCA entrance area for pool activities, etc. Ms. Wait invited the commission to tour other teen centers at some of the other YMCA locations. Commission suggested they set -up and tour a 2 — 3 centers either during the August or September 2011 advisory commission meeting. Ideas and recommendations will be discussed this fall and compiled data will then be presented to the Andover City Council. Next meeting date will be July 11 where the 2012 budget will be discussed as well as 2011 -2012 facility user fees. Packets will be distributed in early July so everyone has enough time to review.
