C A NDOVER Comman# ewer Community Center Advisory Commission Meeting Minutes Monday, July 11, 2011 6:30 pm H Andover YMCA Community Center Meeting Room B In Attendance: Tony Howard, Mike Knight, Erick Sutherland, Allison Boes, Ted Butler, Jason Hemp, Frank Kellogg Guest: Lee Brezinka Call To Order 6:33 pm Absent: Kate Morphew Approval of Minutes — May 9, 2011 minutes approved as written. YMCA Update — The YMCA co- sponsored the Healthy Living Race held on June 18 which raised more than $3,500 for the Y partners program. Approximately 300 youth are enrolled in summer power programs at the Andover facility each weekday. The Andover Membership sales made goal for the last 6 months. Retention is a huge focus for the Y ensuring quality service and programs. The Y is doing a lot of planning for fall programs trying to schedule more things for the older kids (7 -10) to participate in. The Y is also planning to host Family Fun Nights 1 -2 times a month, which will be open to the public. Staff Update - Reviewed the staff status report. Frank suggested Erick research what other facilities are charging for their advertising rates. Mike Knight asked if the community center offered any adult programs. The community center offers drop -in volleyball on Sundays and adult open hockey sessions Sept — May twice a week over the lunch hour. A men's basketball league is also trying to form which would begin this fall. Teen Center was brought up and Erick will be in touch with Allison to coordinate a tour of area teen centers for the advisory committee to attend. Frank Kellogg again suggested that staff look at daytime hours while most kids are in school to see how the facility can best be utilized, perhaps offering our space to schools to use as extended classroom sites. Ted Butler updated the commission on the parks commission discussion of putting in turf and potential sports dome bubble at an Andover area park. The parks commission has invited area athletic associations to a workshop which will be held next week to discuss association needs /desires to utilize such facility. Facility Fees — commission approved the following user fees for 2011/2012: Ice Time Prime - $185 Open Skating Adult - $5 Q Skate Sharpening $4 Court Rental Prime - $46 Open Gym Adult Resident - $3 Ice Time Non -Prime - $140 Open Skating Youth - $4 Court Rental Non -Prime - $40 Open Gym Adult Non - Resident - $5 Andover YMCA Community Center Advisory Commission July 11, 2011 © Page 2 Open Gym Youth - $3 Budget 2012 — Commission reviewed and discussed budget — approved as presented. Other Business — Tony Howard asked if staff was aware of the bricks that were breaking off on the west side of the bldg. Erick indicated RJM is working with Crosstown Masonry to fix the issues. RJM is also working with the contractor to fix the rust/water leakage on the pool ceiling walls. Mr. Howard also mentioned that the new outdoor shelter looks great, however was concerned about the need for landscaping. Staff indicated there is a plan for landscaping to be done around the shelter this fall. The YMCA wanted to utilize the space for a couple months before permanent landscaping items were placed so that landscape items such as trees are appropriately located on the grounds. Frank Kellogg encouraged staff to identify a plan to increase new revenue's and would like to see this on topic on our next meeting agenda. He also encouraged all the commission members to come to the meeting with idea's. Next meeting, August 8, 2011 at the Andover YMCA Community Center, Room B.
