A meeting of the Grow Township Zoning and Planning
Cowmission was held February 2, 1971 at Crooked Lake school.
Chairman Norm Stout called the meeting to order at 7:40 PM with
Commission members Christenson, Holasek, and Rither present.
Mr. Art Bendiske, and others representing the Crooked Lake
Sno-Barons Snowmobile club were also present.
Discussion was continued on the proposed snowmobile
ordinance. Bendiske stated that his organization would prefer
a curfew of 12:00 PM to 7:00 AM Sunday through Thursday and
1:00 or 2:00 AM to 7:00 AM on Friday and Saturday. Stout
pointed out that Coon Rapids was revising their ordinance and
that Grow should conform to the Coon Rapids curfew. Holasek
asked if there was anything in the Coon Rapids ordinance that
was objectionable to the club. Bendiske replied, no; but that
Grow should include tree plantations in the list of prohibited
areas. Stout stated that the list should also include nursery
and wildlife areas.
The current Coon Rapids ordinance was reviewed. A
member of the audience stated that he did not like the curfew
provls1on. After discussion, the majority of interested persons
present agreed that in residential areas the curfew was
probably a good provision. All agreed that any snowmobile
ordinance will be hard to enforce. However, Bendiske stated that
with education of the public regarding laws and safe operation,
it is the ultimate responsibility of the public to enforce the
ordinance and to develop a system of self policing. Holasek
noted that trespassing has always been a problem but with the
advent of the snowmobile, it is a problem of growing concern
among property owners.
No action taken, matter continued.
Moved by Rither, seconded by Holasek, to adjourn.
Motion carried. Meeting was adjourned at 9:30 PM.
Robert A. Rither, Clerk, Zoning and Planning Commission
