MINUTES OF THE GROW TOWNSHIP PARKS/RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD HELD DECEMBER 13, 1973
7:30 P.M. AT CROOKED LAKE SCHOOL
Meeting was called to order at 7:45 p.m. by Vice Chairman Jim Griswold. Minutes of
the November meeting were read and approved as read.
The hockey rink was discussed. Phil Rzeszutek said he couldn't get any help to put
it up, because everyone contacted thought that due to the late start and lack of
lighting that it be put off until spring. Motion to table until later date was
made by Art Sloth; seconded by Cecil Heidelberger; carried.
The matter of flooding general rinks was brought up. Jerry Lapham gave a report on
the amount of water needed for rinks. Small rinks need from 1500 to 3000 gallons;
the regulation size hockey rink will need 43,000 gallons. Rinks to be flooded
are l)Shady Knoll, 2) Chapman (if ready), 3) Crooked Lake, 4) Cedar Crest, and
5) Round Lake. Motion was made by Dick Schneider, seconded by Jerry Lapham to
flood or touch up the rinks listed; motion carried.
Motion was made by Dick Schneider to have H&S Asphalt do the flooding at $15 per
hour with 3,000 gallon truck. Cost not to exceed $100 average per rink; seconded
by Lapham; carried.
The matter of lighting was discussed. Jim Griswold will check out the distances
to be run on Chapman and Shady Knoll and order lights out if there is a rink at
Chapman.
LeRoy Clem talked on baseball fields and the area needed for a ballfield. A
200' radius should take care of most needs up to fifteen-year-olds. Soderville
Athletic Assocition covers Grow Township, Bethel, Soderville and St. Francis areas
and any child can join - no one is turned dO\ffi. They need fields this year so they
don't need to limit the kids that want to join.
The need for sno\~obile areas was also brought up by Mr. Clem. The snowmobile should
be taken into consideration when planning park land and open space.
Mr. Hulegaard has resigned his position as Chairman of this Board, so Jim Griswold
will take over the meetings until after the annual meeting in March.
Lyle Bradley informed the Board that he would like to be replaced on the Board
for the next term due to lack of time and will be gone for the summer as before.
He would like to serve in an advisory capacity when able to attend.
The incorporation hearing for the Township will be held Wednesday, December 19.
The Parks/Recreation Board is expected to make a presentation; Jim Griswold will
represent the Board.
The subject of a Township flag was discussed. Columbia Arena has flags of all
cities and townships except Grow. This subject and the park tour will be discussed
at a later meeting.
