Olsen y-- -_ -_— 763 -226 -6600 I Andover, MN 55304 - ^ a ' December 13, 2010 Mayor and Council City of Andover Mr. Mayor and Council Members, Fifteen years ago I moved my family to Andover from St Paul. I had three young sons and felt it important that they not be raised in the inner -city. Fact is at the time Andover wasn't on our list of possible destinations. But after having looked at many homes & communities, and on a fluke, my wife and I came to see a house in Andover. After driving around and doing a little research we were immediately impressed by so many of Andover's attributes. Among them a new Elementary and Middle school, a new High School in the works, and overall a great mix of suburban settings within close proximity to just about everything we desired. It pretty much just felt right and we made an offer two days later. We've been happy with that decision ever since. Since 1995 the City has nearly doubled in population. To the credit of those at the helm most all the attributes that drew us here in the first place remain, as well as many positive additions. And yet I know that nothing ever really stays the same and challenges keep cropping up. The time has come that I have the time, desire, and I believe the skill set needed to make a significant contribution in the planning of Andover's future. For this reason, I make this application for the Planning Commission. I've included a short resume as well as a couple of the letters of recommendation I submitted several years ago when I applied for a similar position at the Met Council. In my mind, a Planning Commission's recommendations provide the most value to the Council when the Commissioners come from widely varied backgrounds. A very strong argument could be made as to the value of having someone with a real estate and development background on the advisory Planning Commission. Likewise, some might be concerned about potential conflict of interest or biases. The letters I chose speak mostly to character and way I approached my projects from individuals outside LGU's. Mark Karnowski, the City Administrator for Princeton, would be a good person to talk to within a LGU whom I've worked with in the past (763- 389 - 2040). Hopefully, the "bias" concern of my potential appointment would be greatly reduced should someone from Andover give Mark a call. I've provided these letters and Marks number because fifteen minutes of interview is not a long time to get "a read" on a person. Should the Council want more in the way of references I'd be happy to oblige. I look forward to meeting with the Council in January, and thank you for your consideration. My practice is comprised primarily of real estate and real estate litigation, and I have been certified by the Minnesota State Bar Association as a Real Property Law Specialist. Michael Olsen has asked "me to provide a reference in connection with his application for membership on the Metropolitan Council's Housing and Land Use Advisory Committee. I met Michael socially in 1995.. Thereafter, he became a client in connection with several real estate matters. One of these involved a development of approximately thirteen recreational lots, with frontage on the Kettle River in Pine County Minnesota, another, the residential development of 45 acres within the City of Lindstrom. Both projects were well thought out, and resulted in successful development consistent with the land . use controls in effect in each area. Michael -has the ability to think analytically, and to apply the law and regulations to his own projects. By time Michael comes to my office, he has taken the time to. thoroughly research the statutes, and the city, county or state regulations in connection with his question. I do not need to educate Michael on the legal issues effecting his questions, and sornetimes, he will have a greater knowledge of the law in connection with a particular issue than 1. In addition, Michael is a good communicator, both one -on -one, and when making a presentation to a group, for instance city council or county board. He is well prepared and to the point. I have seen him make presentations to various govermnental boards or councils and the presentations were professional and comprehensive. I believe Michael is exactly the kind of person that should have a seat on the Housing and Land Use Advisory Committee. He is familiar with the issues involving residential development and land use in the metro area, and will provide valuable input to the committee. If you would like to talk to me personally about Michael's application, please don't hesitate to contact me. Metropolitan Council Peter Bell, Chairman Mears Park Centre 230 East 5°i St St. Paul, MN 55101 April 25, 2003 NOMINATION FOR HOUSING AND LAND USE ADVISORY COMMITTEE Dear Mr. Bell: I would like to recommend Michael Olsen for the Land Use and Advisory Committee. I came to know Mr. Olsen through my position as an area hydrologist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in Cambridge. My position places me in the role of regulator to developers and local units of governments, particularly as it relates to water resources. Mr. Olsen has developed several parcels of land in the three county area that I work in. He has consistently designed and constructed his developments in a manner that has both protected and enhanced the natural features of the lands and waters. He has experience in developing near shorelands, floodplains and Wild and Scenic River corridors. He is able to design and develop in harmony with the local land use controls, without seeking to circumvent the intent of natural resource regulations. I am confident Mr. Olsen would be a dedicated and articulate voice for sustainable development if he is appointed to the Committee. Please give him strong consideration for the position. If I may be of further assistance, please feel free to call me. Sincerely(, Mike Mueller 1005 —329°i Ave NW Cambridge, MN 55008 763.689.1987 I.1 Landmark Community Bank,N, . Dated: (z 1 /u Signature r Cover letter and resumes encouraged for this commission Suzanne Van Hecke AN 763- 712 -5872 December 10, 2010 Attn: City of Andover I am submitting my application for Open Spaces Advisory Commissioner and have included my resume and references for your review. We have been Andover residents since 2002 and during that time, I've enjoyed being a stay -at- home mom. Our neighborhood is full of families and we have made many connections in our community. Andover has been a wonderful place to raise our children After enjoying being a stay -at -home mom for over 9 years, I began dabbling with volunteering, when my youngest son first started kindergarten. Later, I later decided to take the part -time job of "Substitute Lunch Lady" or properly known as Substitute Child Nutrition Assistant for the Anoka Hennepin School District. Being a lunch lady is not the most interesting job in the world but I do like the hours and the flexibility, and I like being involved in our schools. I found myself quite busy this past election season as I agreed to volunteer for a political campaign. In that time, not only did I become interested in public policy and how local governments work, I also dusted off some old job skills and was very gratified for the intellectual stimulus. Why would I want to apply for Open Spaces Commissioner? As an Andover resident, I would like to be more involved in my community. We are very fond of the rural feel of our northern Andover neighborhood, where people move here to enjoy the extra elbow room. We hope our City Council will continue to keep it that way. And though we love all the existing farmland, we know it won't all stay forever. Just as we came to Andover to live in a better home, so we expect others to want to build and develop here, as well. I am struck by the beauty of the Rum River. It is so easily accessible to our local residents, and yet it remains undeveloped along its shores. Our family has a tradition of floating down the Rum River every 4th of July and we feel so lucky to have it close by. We also love our parks and open spaces. As a homeowner AND taxpayer, I would love to see continued efforts to preserve our open spaces. I understand any city would like to increase fax revenue by incoming development, but if there are ways to preserve Andover's rural character for the benefit of the current residents, I would like to be a part of that effort. I believe I have a balanced viewpoint and would do my best to research and communicate with residents about the subject.
