We were drawn to Andover because of its mix of rural and urban character, excellent schools, low taxes and its relative safety. My primary reason for wanting to serve on the Planning and Zoning Commission is to help preserve the unique character of the community that drew us and many other families to Andover. I believe that the City has done a very good job of balancing residential and business development, but the pressures that come from decreased state funding and the demands of a growing community could jeopardize this balance. I also am concerned about the future of Andover, particularly when the population ages. I believe that planning decisions now, with an eye to the future, can ensure that Andover maintains a healthy mix of young and old, along with maintaining a tax base that will support changing demographics. Describe your education/experience, which qualifies you to serve on this commission: I am an attorney with over 23 years experience practicing law. My focus has been on corporate, securities and insurance law, litigation management, mergers and acquisitions and investment law, including finance, and real estate. I have primarily practiced as in- house counsel for local insurance and financial services companies. I have also served as board secretary for several investment companies and a publicly traded, New York Stock Exchange listed company where I was General Counsel and a member of the executive management committee. Presently, I am a sole practitioner serving local small business owners. I graduated Magna Cum Laud from William Mitchell College of Law in 1987. I did my undergraduate studies at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, where I graduated with a BA in Political Science in 1982. My emphasis was in urban government and planning. I have attached my resume for your further consideration. Describe your professional, civic or community activities, which may be relevant to this commission: As mentioned above, I have served as legal counsel and board secretary for a number of companies. In this capacity, I have worked closely with boards of directors, executive management and management committees in connection with significant finance and planning matters of importance to the operations of the companies that have previously employed me. I believe these experiences make me well suited to serve on the Planning and Zoning Commission. I recognize the importance of being prepared, asking the tough questions, carefully listening and collaborating with colleagues. I also believe that my legal background and experience working with both state and federal regulators will be a valuable asset to the Commission and City. With regard to community activities, I have been an active member of Meadow Creek Church, where I have taught Sunday School, volunteered at youth activities and served on various committees related to church programs and the relationship with Legacy Christian Academy (formerly known as Meadow Creek Christian School). My family and I are now part of a core group establishing a new church in Ramsey, Connections Church. I have also volunteered at Legacy Christian Academy. These volunteer activities have made me keenly aware of the family oriented community we live in and the need to preserve and enhance the best that this community has to offer.
