Commission Members Present: Commission Members Absent: Also Present: LeFebvre, Longbella and Nichols Anderson, Meyer and Rogers Nancy Hagman, Community School-Summer School Gary West, Northwoods East Park CmmXUNITY SCHOOL~SUMMERSCHOOLPROGRA11S The proposed 1981 budget for these two programs is $20,764.00. Nancy Hagman gave a detailed report of the activities and attendance during the 1980 summer school program. In most cases attendance rose, however, she questioned the drop in attendance at Quickstrom. Chairman Mand stated some of the kids in this area are getting older and attended the summer school program at Wilson. He then advised Nancy of the Northglen plat and park which will most likely bring younger residents into the area. Also, Cedar Crest will be reshaped during the upcoming road project - the residents will then know where the park is. Nancy further commented she was very satisified with the program this year and mentioned that Champlin, Dayton and Ramsey also ran Recreation on Wheels this year and they also had good attendance. She said she would like to find a site in the northeast part of the City. Chairman Mand then told her of the plans of Magnuson Sod to clear and improve Forest Meadows. One thing she forgot to mention at Tuesday night's City Council meeting was that the park maintenance was excellent this year. Chairman Mand then asked the difference between morning and afternoon playground. Nancy said the morning playground was mostly crafts and the afternoon was more activity orientated such as games, special events, hikes, etc. He then suggested more crafts in the afternoon in order to try and draw people who go to summer school in the morning. Nancy stated she was worried about staffing but would consider it. She then explained the baseball program. This summer they charged a $5.00 fee which included a T shirt. The balance was used to offset the cost of the program. Attendance was about 20 over last year. Next summer they will try to puBbize it more and encourage preregistration. Suggested was to change it from baseball into softball. The feeling was more, especially girls, would participate. The parents would probably also encourage softball as it is a safer sport. Nancy explained they play with Anoka, which has always been baseball, but if Coon Rapids was willing to change, they might switch over. The total participants were 10B3, or about $6.00 per person. The 1981 budget was then discussed. Nancy stated the City pays about 30-35% of the total with Oe School District and Federal Government picking up the rest. The college students were id $3.60 an hour; the adults $4.25-$4.50 and CETA, $3.10. She is proposir€ to raise the salaries next year as they have been the same for the past three years. Due to the inflation, this is necessary in order to get qualified help. This year one of the students was an .Page fl.3 - Minutes August 7, 1980 u o o G Meadowood North - playground equipment Boat Landing - grant plus $500 for concrete picnic tables 'Jorthwoods West - trees, backstop and blacktop \..-dorthwoods East - more ag lime, benches, set of bases Red Oaks West - backstop White Oaks - dredging - replace Kadlec fees Hawk Ridge - grade, backstop and soccer goals Pine Hills - finish grade, pickup topsoil, spread, haul fill from LakeRidge, reseed Fox Meadows - fill from road project, need engineering for grading City Hall - new hockey rink warming house/rec. center soccer fields baseball field bleachers $ 1,000.00 6,950.00 1,000.00 400.00 1,000.00 2,755.00 6,000.00 2,000.00 8,000.00 6,000.00 25,000.00 4,000.00 4,000.00 1,000.00 Total Capital Improvement Items $69,105.00 Salaries-Commission - no change from 19S0 Salaries-Staff - based on 7% cost of living - Bakke, 20%, Sowada, 10%; Stone, 10%; Winner, 10%; park person, 100%.
