(612) 755-5100 PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION - OCTOBER fi, 1994 MINUTES The Regular Bi-Monthly Meeting of the Andover Park and Recreation Commission was called to order by Chairperson Tom Anderson on October 18, 1994, 7:30 p.m., at the Andover City Hall, 1685 Crosstown Boulevard NW, Andover, Minnesota. . Commissioners present: Dave Erickson, Jeff Kieffer, Dave O'Toole, Roger Paulson Commissioner absent: Jim Lindahl Also present :,.:.;.:..~...;:.~e-t;~ ..,,;.....~;~,.-. APPROVAL OF MINUTES October 6, 1994: The Commission had not received copies of the Minutes. MOTION by Kieffer, Seconded by O'Toole, to table to the next meeting. Motion carried on a 5-Yes, I-Absent (Lindahl) vote. /' ...., ~ DISCUSSION/PROJECT IP91~4 The Commission discussed the issue of whether or not to rebid the lighting of two ball fields at the City Hall Complex #1. Staff estimated the cost to revise, the plans and specifications would be about $2,100. They questioned whether Staff would be able to do the work of Option 2 for $800, which would mean the cost would then be $1,300. While the Commission still thought the $1,300 cost was high, they felt there would be a need to light these fields because of the great need at this time, there may not be lights at the Fields of Dreams site for another year, and to provide some relief to the use of the new fields at Complex #2. The general feeling was it would not be a waste of money to light the fields at Complex #1. There are no other lighted fields in the City. It was then decided to get. input from the athletic associations as to whether or not they feel the fields at Complex #1 should be lighted. MOTION by Kieffer, Seconded by Paulson, to table this to our next meeting and to invite the various athletic association members to get their voice as well; and ask for Staff's verification if they can handle the bid. Have Staff invite the Andover Athletic Association members and the Andover Baseball Association members. Motion carried on a 5-Yes, 1- Absent (Lindahl) vote. ) ) ~ Regular Andover Park and Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes - October 20, 1994 Page 2 RESIDENT FORUM Steve Johnson, 14033 Yukon Street NW stated some trees in the Northwoods East Park that border his property have begun to die. He wanted the Park Commission and the Tree Commission to be aware of the disease that is affecting the seedless green ash trees. The ash trees were planted in the park about 14 years ago, and he has been watering them and caring for them all this time. He noted some branches dying last year; and when another one died this year, he took it down to the University to have it examined. They diagnosed it as having Viticillium wilt, a fungus for which there is no cure and which can spread as does oak wilt and Dutch elm disease. He left some information on the fungus and suggested a varieb-t'",*~t.1f~8,-..ged planted in the parks to avoid diseases from killing all of them, Mr. Johnson also suggested this information may be given to the residents in the newsletter so they are aware of it. The Commissioners thanked Mr. Johnson for the information and asked that Staff make copies of the information for them to receive at the next meeting as well as forward the information to the Tree Commission. UPDATE ON FIELD OF DREAMS PROJECT Commissioner O'Toole stated the contractor is about two weeks behind in the project. The sodding will be done on October 29 at 8 a.m. At least two fields should be ready to sod. MOTION by Kieffer, Seconded by Paulson, to adjourn. Motion carried on a 5-Yes, I-Absent (Lindahl) vote. The meeting adjourned at 7:50 p.m. Respectfully submitted, ~~<~ Recording Secretary
