ANDOVER, MN 55304 PHONE 763-576-6672 . E-MAIL JODYKEPP@EARTHLINK.NET Reasons for requesting to be on the advisory commission Why do I want to become a member ofthe Open Space Advisory Commission? Perhaps it's because, like many Minnesotans, I appreciate the value oftrees, nature, and the outdoors. Minnesota has a tradition, even in its cities, of taking care that nature is not ignored. I was born in the eastern part of Duluth in the early 1960s. When I was in elementary school, many new homes were still being built in my neighborhood. My brothers and I would go for hikes to some of the unbuilt areas, playing around in gravel pits and walking in the woods. By the time I entered junior high school, those unbuih areas were mostly gone, covered with new homes. But fortunately, that did not mean that nature and the woods were gone in my neighborhood. The early leaders of the city had made some wise decisions that have ensured that nature will always have a place in the city. Way back in the 1910s and 1920s, they had set aside land to be preserved from development. Some of the land was developed into traditional parks with picnic tables; park shelters, flowered gardens and structured swimming. But a lot of it was left in a mostly natural state, providing habitat for the woodland creatures that abound in northeastern Minnesota. Thus, even after my neighborhood was filled with houses, I could look up from my parents' back yard and see the wooded crest of Hawk Ridge looking down on me. My friends and I could hop on our bikes, ride down to Amity Creek and have fun swimming on a fine summer day. And my sister's kids, who live in the same neighborhood today, can still do the same thing. When I came down to the Twin Cities to get my education, I found that the founders of the Twin Cities had had similar foresight. In 1880s, strategic areas of land had been set aside for parkland and as natural areas. When I lived in Minneapolis, I found that trees and nature were still only a short bike ride away, even in the big city. I was content living in Minneapolis. But times change, life goes on, and I got married. My wife owned a nice little house in the Meadows of Round Lake, with its back facing a large wetland and Round Lake just visible out the kitchen window. Every spring and fall, turtles crawled across her property in a semiannual migration between the wetland and the lake. Although it increased my commuting time by quite a bit, I thought it was a great idea for me to move to Andover. I have now lived here for seven years. With potential family needs in view, my wife and I moved a few blocks to a larger home. It had a bigger yard, too, with about a third of an acre of lawn and half an acre of woods. And there is a convenient little park just across the street. Our young son loves playing in them all- the yard, the woods, and the park. We consider ourselves lucky. Jody Keppers 4015 146'" Lane NW Andover, MN 55304 It seems to me that Andover has made some wise decisions about open space in its short history as a city. As the city's website states, there is already a park system of more than 400 acres, serving a variety of purposes from active play to more subdued enjoyment and preservation of nature. But as everyone in this town knows, Andover is developing very rapidly. Farmland is giving way to homes, streets and businesses. We must continue to make those wise decisions, and one way to do that is to prudently acquire open space so that it can be preserved for future generations. I would like to be a part of that process. Education & Experience I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota with a double major in History and Architecture, as well as a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Minnesota. The history degree helped broaden my education beyond the professional training related to my architectural studies, which consisted of a lot of drawing, urban design study, and technical courses. My academic career was pretty successful; my undergraduate gpa was about 3.7 and my graduate gpa was 4.0. Professionally, I have spent most of my time working for Keith Waters & Associates, a :fmn in Eden Prairie that specializes in designing and building high-end homes. We like to think that we design our homes to show a lot of respect for the land, fitting into their lots with a minimum disruption of trees and other natural features. Keith Waters & Associates is not a big:firm; it has only about twenty full-time employees and usually builds about a dozen or so homes a year. So in my time at Waters, we have mainly built on isolated lots, carefully chosen for their interesting topography or views. However, in the last eight years or so I have helped create a few new neighborhoods, and I think they are laid out in a way that shows an understanding of the value of open spaces. . The prime example is Portico, a neighborhood of24 homesites on 24 acres in Minnetonka. It is designed as a "conservation development" in which the homes are concentrated on relatively small lots surrounded by open space. The houses are clustered around two "village greens" that are small open fields perfect for family gatherings and casual play. But most of the open space is wetland or woods that have been restored to their original natural state and will be maintained by ecologists. My role in this work at Waters has been significant. Keith Waters, the founder and majority partner in the firm, is of course the driving force shaping the aesthetic and business direction of the firm. But when we have designed projects like Portico that required extensive review and discussion with city officials, I have usually been his primary assistant in coordinating communication and documentation And I have drawn many new homes, developing designs into working plans and acted as project manager as they were built. So I have worked with city departments, planning commissions, watershed districts and the like. And I think I have a pretty good idea of how they work. Professional, civic & community activities ---.-- -------- Jody Keppers 4015 146"' Lane NW Andover, MN 55304 I've been pretty busy lately with career and family concerns, so I don't have a whole lot to add to this category. But I was the layout editor for Preservation Matters, the newsletter ofthe Preservation Alliance of Minnesota, for most ofthe 1990s. I have also participated in the University of Minnesota Sailing Club and done design work for my church. And I'm interested in the welfare of Andover and would be glad to get to know its people and its landscape better. I think participation in the Open Space Advisory Commission would be a good vehicle for that! Thanks much for your consideration, Jody Keppers ---~ -.---.- 4015 146TH LANE NW .
