I Conclusions and Recommendations This section of the report provides conclusions and recommendations based on the results of the study. Conclusions from the data are presented first, followed by recommendations (=>) pertaining to the conclusions. YMCA Imaae & Awareness + When asked about their familiarity with the YMCA, most respondents are somewhat familiar. A small percentage is not at all familiar. + Overall, most respondents see the YMCA as being family-oriented, safe, and a place to go for adult physical fitness. Most people also believe the YMCA offers a wide variety of programming for everyone. Also, about two-thirds of respondents feel that the presence of a YMCA would strengthen a community. . Those respondents classified as "likely joiners" are more likely than those classified as "non-joiners" to believe the YMCA is family-friendly and safe, has a variety of programming choices, is a place to go for adult physical fitness activities, and that a YMCA makes a community stronger. + Respondents are most aware that the YMCA offers swimming lessons, youth and teen programs, and adult fitness programs. They are least aware of the before- and after- J school childcare programs and scholarships offered to families who cannot financially afford their membership costs. => The YMCA should build on residents' modest familiarity with its programs and. services, as well as with the organization as a whole. We recommend that the YMCA not only provide general information to Andover residents and the surrounding communities but also make people aware of their childcare programs and financial assistance programs/scholarships since respondents were least aware of these aspects. => . The YMCA should promote and maintain perceptions' that it provides a safe environment for adults and children, a variety of programming options, and that the presence of a YMCA strengthens a community. . Desired YMCA Characteristics and Activities + Respondents are most interested in an indoor water pari<, cardiovascular machines, a track for walking and jogging, and a sauna and whirlpool adjacent to an indoor pool. Respondents expressed the least amount of interest in an arts and crafts room, water aerobics, and a meeting space for community groups. Approximately one-third indicated having a great deal of interest in swimming lessons. / ~NieWhr&Associates,Ioc. 1 2002 Andover YMCA Study . . About one in 10 respondents expressed interest in senior programs and activities. Of those, respondents are most interested in an indoor senior walkers program, \ rehabilitation programs, and senior day trips to places of interest. ) . Slightly more than half of respondents are interested in the YMCA's youth programs and activities for kids under 18. Family swim and gym nights, a teen center, and after-school swimmingle, ssons are the most desired youth activities. Respondents showed the least amount of interest in before- and after-school childcare and family camping trips. => When deciding what programs and equipment should be included in a YMCA membership, we suggest the YMCA focus on providing what respondents want most: an indoor water park, cardiovascular machines, a walking and running track, a sauna and whirlpool adjacent to an indoor pool, and youth activities. => The YMCA should also recognize that it will serve diverse clientele including adults, families, seniors, and youth when designing its facility and programming. The YMCA will need to segment market appeals to highlight the programs and services appropriate to the different needs of these groups, especially youth programming. Interest in a YMCA Membership . When asked whether they believe Andover would be positively or negatively impacted by the YMCA jointly managing a Community Center in Andover, nearly all respondents believe this partnership would have a positive impact. Also, most respondents would like to see the YMCA become part of Andover. \ . Regarding payment options to use the YMCA portion of the Community Center, I respondents are evenly split: just under half prefer to pay each time they use the facility while the same percentage prefer to pay a monthly fee for unlimited use of the facility. . One-quarter of respondents pay taxes for the City of Andover. Of those taxpayers, three-quarters would either definitely, probably, or maybe join a YMCA located in the new Community Center. Of those who do not pay taxes for Andover, slightly more than half would either definitely, probably, or maybe join this YMCA. The majority of both groups who are likely to join would prefer family memberships as opposed to individual memberships. , . Of those respondents who are likely to join the YMCA and who would want either an - individual or family membership, slightly more than half of both groups would prefer a membership they could use at any Twin Cities YMCA as opposed to a membership at the Andover YMCA only. Of those who prefer an individual membership, most are willing to pay an additional $2 per month for this benefit, while only about half of those who prefer a familv membership would pay an additional $12 per month. . Slightly more than half of all respondents showed an interest in paying $7 per day, per person to use an indoor water park. Of those who are interested, two-thirds think they would use the water park at least once a week. ~NiehJhr&A$ociafes,IIl:. i i \! 2 j' I 2002 Andover YMCA Study I f i ,,:~.--::~;..;-.,. .!. - ~,-"~_-:::':':\--.~" ,..------.-'C""'":-: :".: ",:'~". -_.,..~-:---;--.---.-.--;~ . .'__~~,.~~~..m;..-,.,._.~; ___.__~..,_,__...,__., . ---.-.__. _ . .." More than seven in ten respondents would be willing to travel between three and 1 0 miles and between six and 15 minutes to use a YMCA located in Andover. Also, most would prefer to exercise at a facility close to home versus work. . Fewer than one in ten respondents currently have a membership to the Emma B. Howe YMCA facility in Coon Rapids. => Almost all respondents believe that the YMCA would have a positive impact on Andover, and most would like the YMCA to become part of Andover. Therefore, the YMCA should leverage this finding with community leaders who will decide whether _ to pursue a partnership between the City of Andover and the YMCA. This information may also be useful when soliciting support for the partnership with public and private sponsors. => Consider the feasibility of offering both the monthly and. daily fee options due to the evenly divided interest shown for both types of payment structures. The YMCA should also consider whether meml?ers would be given the option to pay more per month in order to use any YMCA facility in the Twin Cities. => The data shows a strong interest for a YMCA in Andover. Although respondents are split between daily .pay as you go' fees versus monthly membership fees, the market projections indicate potential for a strong monthly membership base for a YMCA in this location. / Factors InfluenclnCl Respondents' Decision to Join the YMCA . Facility cleanliness, membership cost, safety, facility hours, and. the types of programming offered have the greatest influence on whether respondents would join a YMCA in Andover. Of least importance to a respondent's decision to join are the availability of childcare and transportation to the facility. => We would encourage the YMCA to continue focusing efforts on the above influential factors and communicate to the Andover community how they plan on keeping the facility clean and safe, maintaining flexible hours, and offering a variety of programs - all at a reasonable cost. . Respondents' Exercise and Fitness Activities . Many respondents indicated being physically active: nearly three-quarters are involved in some type of regular physical exercise or recreational activity. However, only about one- third currently belongs to a health, fitness, or recreational facility. Of those who do belong to such a facility, most are planning to renew their membership. => These findings suggest that a need exists for the type of exercise and health facility the YMCA could bring to the Andover area. The YMCA should capitalize on this need and target marketing appeals to these active individuals and families. / ~N"JebJhr&Associates,hl:. 3 2002 Andover YMCA Study . Background and Purpose r '\ / The purpose of this research is to assess whether a YMCA can be sustained in Andover, Minnesota. The YMCA is considering jointly managing a new Community Center in Andover that would include a recreational, health, and fitness facility: Specifically, the research assessed the following: => Respondents' image and awareness of the YMCA in general => Respondents' desired programming and facilities of a YMCA in Andover => Respondents' interest in a YMCA membership => Respondents' likelihood to join a YMCA in Andover => Respondents' support for a YMCA becoming part of their community => Market projections for a YMCA in Andover \ . / The YMCA retained the independent market research firm of Anderson, Niebuhr & Associates, Inc. to conduct this research. --. ~NiehJhr&A~tes,Ioc. .' '\. , / 4 2002 Andover YMCA Study -- . ..... ." ._.U.. h ~ ._._..__._...--'....O-~_ . / Research Method This section of the report provides a description of the research method used to cond~ct the survey, including a description of the population and sample, questionnaire design, data collection, and data analysis. Population and Sample The population of interest for this study is residents within a 5-mile radius of Andover, Minnesota. Specifically, the center of the radius is the future location of where the ,new Andover Community Center will be built. The most commonly mentioned zip codes included in this radius are 55304, 55433, 55448, 55303, 55316, and 55434. Anderson-Niebuhr obtained a list of households within the defined geographical radius. From this list, Anderson-Niebuhr drew an equal probability random sample of 350 households. This sample size yields results accurate to :t:5% with a 95% confidence level when generalizing to all households in this area. Questionnaire Design . To construct the questionnaire, Anderson-Niebuhr met with representatives from the YMCA and City of Andover to discuss the issues and topics to be addressed in the survey. Using information from these di~cussions, Anderson-Niebuhr prepared a draft survey that was reviewed by the YMCA and City of Andover representatives. ' The, questionnaire was pretested with a random sample of ten residents. Anderson-Niebuhr made recommendations for changes based on the pretest results; the questionnaire was then revised and finalized. A copy of the questionnaire is located in the appendix. Data ' \, / Collection Th~ surveys were conducted using Anderson-Niebuhr's established ., telephone survey methodology. Interviews were conducted using Computer Aided Telephone Interviewing (CATt) software. Data collection occurred from October 17 through November 8, 2002. A total of 350 surveys was completed yielding a response rate of 60%. Data Analysis Anderson-Niebuhr defined analyses to be performed in consultation with YMCA representatives. Anderson-Niebuhr's on-site computer facilities and computer programs containing the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSSlWindows) were used to conduct the analyses. Complete descriptive statistics are provided for each survey. item. Crosstabulation analyses were conducted to determine significant " differences between those respondents who are likely to join the ) YMCA and those who are not. Respondents who answered definitely join, probably join, or maybe join to either question 12 (Andover taxpayers only) or question 13 (non-taxpayers) are classified as "likely joiners." Those respondents who indicated they would probably not or definit, ely not join are classified as "non-joiners." The results of these analyses are displayed within the Overall Findings under the heading "Other Findings." In addition, respondents' comments to the open-end questions that asked why respondents probably or definitely would not join the YMCA were coded into themes and are displayed in tables in the Overall Findings. Finally. market projections were conducted for both Andover taxpayers and non-taxpayers and are presented in a separate section of this report. ,- '\ ~Nreluhr&Associates,Jn:. 6 2002 Andover YMCA Study Summary of Overall Findings This section of the report presents findings based on the responses of 350 residents living in the defined geographical area.
