Andover is a rapidly expanding community and the need to protect and preserve the remaining natural resources, such as tress, prairies and other open spaces, is becoming increasingly important. As land is developed, areas are clear cut and prairies destroyed. Such growth, negatively impacts wildlife and pollinators that once depended on these areas. Additionally, Andover residents appreciate being outdoors and traversing natural areas, watching wildlife in the process; thus, they too are impacted as they have less access to viewing animals as they graze. The reality that residents move to this community with the expectation of living in an area that is a smaller town, closer to a big city feel comprised of natural areas for wildlife mustn't be ignored. Residents are concerned about the issues I have raised, and I wish to speak on their behalf. Looking forward, many steps can be taken to create a balance between preserving areas residents treasure, while promoting development. Describe your education/experience, which qualifies you to serve on this commission: I have a deepened interest in tree preservation and prairie restoration. For my college composition course this fall, I researched and wrote a paper, which focused on ways to help restore endangered prairies in Minnesota and beyond. A key finding was that monarch butterflies have declined by 90% in 20 years, due to the loss of native prairies and continued urban expansion. Additionally, I have reviewed tree preservation plans for other cities in the Metro area, as well as In communities across the nation. I have learned ways to focus on the preservation of open spaces and how to restore them to their once natural state. Describe your professional, civic or community activities, which may be relevant to this commission: My goal is to collaboratively serve others by preserving, protecting and restoring open spaces, trees and prairies, while promoting development in the community. One way I am carrying out this mission is by being a member of the Arbor Day Foundation, offering and planting trees In the community. I have been a resident of Andover for the past five years and have greatly benefited from the planning and dedication of city officials and their desire to make Andover a strong community for its residents. Now that my children are older, I am seeking involvement at greater capacity and feel a position on the Park & Recreation Commission would be an excellent fit for my previous experiences and skills. The bulk of my experience is in education. I have taught in public, private, and homeschool settings. In all these roles, I have planned and participated in numerous group outings and field trips to parks, public works, fire stations, Nights to Unite, and more. I am looking forward to this new opportunity to serve on the Park & Recreation Commission to continue a strong tradition of community engagement in Andover. I have the necessary communication and problem -solving skills needed for this role. Though 1 do not have experience in public policy, I am excited to learn and look forward to the opportunity to partner with the commission in an effort to facilitate the success of the Andover City Council. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to interviewing in January Sincerely, Kristin Lackie Enclosure Objective Experience Kristin Lackie To be appointed to a 3 -year term on the Andover Park & Recreation Commission. 2020 -Present Well Planned Degree Owner lnstructor/Educational Consultant Andover.
