Mark will be representing AHYHA on the commission. Approval of Minutes — February 13, 2012 minutes approved as written. Is the Andover YMCA Community Center just a sports facility or is it also a community center? The main focus of this advisory commission is to take a look at community needs - we have an obligation to all groups. Our current facility has no dedicated space for teens or active older adults, lacks storage space and meeting rooms. Maple Grove Community Center Teen Center — Utilized by teens 12 —17 — most youth are between the ages of 12 - 15. The teen center has a teen advisory board which meets twice a month. Features a "game" room with coin operated pool tables, air hockey table (most liked), and arcade games (provided by Theisen Vending), a small amount of seating, a jukebox (recommended to get something easily upgradeable /most recent tunes), a large screen TV for video games and one computer with internet access. In addition to this room there is a "movie" room which contains a large projection screen and projection equipment (enclosed in a box so it won't get vandalized), couches and chairs. The staff office is on the other side of the movie room with a large clear © glass window and door opening out into the "game room ". The movie room is also used by Seniors for their movie days and can also be used as an extra meeting area if needed. Both rooms have security cameras (movie room contains night vision camera) which are recorded. Camera screens from teen center as well as other parts of the center are monitored by the facility's front desk staff. Mainly used if needed to obtain information on thefts. Andover YMCA Community Center Advisory Commission March 12, 2012 © Page 2 Teen center is generally staffed by 1 person, weekends additional staff will be brought in. Staff ages are 17 -24, as this age group often knows what to "watch" for and can make friends with the youth. The center has partnered with a local church who rents out the space for their weekly Sunday morning services, the teen center then opens around noon those days. These rooms are dedicated areas just for teens, when asked about their typical attendance numbers .... 15 -20 kids, Weekdays (3 — 9 pm) 25 -70 kids, Fridays (3 —10 pm) 80 —120 kids, Saturdays (10 am —10 pm) Sundays (10 am — 6 pm) When asked if the teen center provides programs and classes — they do offer classes such as babysitting courses, special events such as black light dodge ball, club night (DJ) etc. The teen center area is also available for private rental and for birthday parties. Maple Grove has their own separate park and rec. department that coordinates many programs at the community center. Program catalogs are produced throughout the year and distributed to residents. The Maple Grove school district also has community education programs that are offered to the community. Questions were asked about membership at the Maple Grove Community Center. Residents may choose to purchase an annual membership, pay to play, or purchase a coupon booklet. There is a discount for Maple Grove residents. The Maple Grove police dept also partner with the community center. Instead of the officers patrolling the parks, October — March, they work out of the community center 4 nights a week. n Senior Area— there is a separate designated area for the seniors. Includes tables and chairs and shelving for their books (library/book club, etc.). There is a nice covered outdoor patio area as well. Senior room is also available for private rental. White Bear Lake YMCA One designated space used by teens and seniors — Open room, includes seating (booths and tables), a large projection screen & equipment, as well as additional large screen tvs. Small storage room and a small counter used to provide a few concession items such as coffee, smoothies /slushes and snack items. The room is used during day -time hours for seniors who have coffee and treats, planned activities, with Bingo being the biggest draw. The room is then used by the teens (6 —10 graders) from 3 — 8 pm, Monday thin Friday. They typically see 30 — 50 youth per day. Most kids are bused from the middle schools and then the parents need to pick them up after school from the center. Area also used for birthday parties and school release day programming (days school is not in session and kids need childcare). © Next meeting will be held, Monday, April 9`h at 6:30 pm. Meeting adjourned at 8:30 pm. Submitted by, Cindy Ramseier
